The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest want to remind ice climbers that there are group-size limits in certain areas of the Forest. These areas, known as Skylight and Horsetails, are within the Ouray Ranger District.  Citing the need to protect public safety, reduce user conflict and to provide for better recreation experiences for ice climbers in two popular winter recreation areas, restrictions prohibit:

Ice climbing on the north side of Camp Bird Road (Forest Road 853/County Road 361) between Senator’s Gulch and Camp Bird (T43N, R8W) in the area referred to as “Skylight” with a group of 6 people or more.

Ice climbing southwest of Colorado State Highway 550 on Bear Creek and Ralston Creek (T43N, R7W) in the area known as “Horsetails” with a group of six people or more.  This includes Bear Creek Falls.

When asked about the restrictions, Tammy Randall-Parker, Ouray District Ranger, stated, “We want ice climbers to enjoy themselves on the Forest and to do so in a safe manner.  We think this is a positive thing and climbers who use the area have asked for these restrictions.”

The restrictions were first enacted in 2000 and were renewed on January 26th by an Order signed by the Forest Supervisor, and will be in effect until it is rescinded or April 15, 2013, whichever event occurs first.
