The Grand Junction Police Department is investigating the death of a person whose body was found inside a car on Orchard Mesa last night. When law enforcement arrived it was determined that there may be some hazardous materials in the area and called in the Grand Junction Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team. Investigators did not find any indications of foul play.  At this time the Mesa County Coroner’s Office is working to determine the identity of the person, as well as the cause of death.  An update is expected later today.

The Montrose Fire Protection District responded to a total of 2,606 calls for service last year, which is a 9% decrease from calls in 2008. According to the year-end report the majority of the calls were responded to by Station 1 and were EMS calls. While calls clearly happened every day of the week, the report shows that Saturdays in 2009 were the busiest days that the fire district responded to.  January was the busiest month for EMS calls while March was the busiest month for fire related calls. The report also shows that fire destroyed nearly $5 million dollars worth of property last year. The Montrose Fire Protection District achieved six major accomplishments in 2009 including the completion of Phase I of the training facility and purchasing land for Station 3.
