Highway 50 reopened last night around 11:00 after shutting down due to an avalanche.  Colorado State Patrol says Highway 50 was closed headed towards Gunnison near milemarker 123, which is about 28 miles east of Montrose.  No vehicles were caught in the avalanche.

Fourteen-year-old plans are finally taking off with the final phase of a performance stage to be constructed in Cerise Park. Montrose City Parks Planner Dennis Erickson tells the Telluride Watch that the Outdoor Education Center will be built into the side of Sunset Mesa and that a grand opening event will be held May 15th.  The Montrose Community Foundation is taking donations to construct the stage. The amphitheater was originally planned into the 1996 Montrose Parks Master Plan.

Former Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office Captain Michelle Zadra appears in court today for the start of a 4-day trial. Zadra is being charged with suspicion of first-degree perjury, conspiracy to commit perjury, first-degree official misconduct, and false reporting to authorities in her part of what’s being called a “soap-opera” at the Gunnison County Jail last year.  Two other Sheriff’s Office employees and one inmate were arrested regarding the same “soap opera” which allegedly involved sex and drugs. The three Gunnison County Detention Officers who were caught up in their own soap opera at the jail appear in court today (10/20/09). Captain Michelle Zadra, Sergeant Melissa Rogers, and former deputy Tawnya Sponable were involved in disorderly conduct at the jail, all circling around one inmate (Joseph Stromayer). The inmate and his ex-wife (Rachel Stromayer) are also facing charges in this saga that involves sex and drugs amongst each other.
Charges:
Captain Michelle Zadra: suspicion of first-degree perjury, conspiracy to commit perjury, first-degree official misconduct, and false reporting to authorities.
Sergeant Melissa Rogers: suspicion of first-degree perjury, conspiracy to commit perjury, first-degree official misconduct, and false reporting to authorities.
Former Sheriff’s Deputy Tawnya Sponable: conspiracy to commit perjury, first-degree official misconduct, conspiracy to introduce contraband, false reporting, theft under $500, and possession of a schedule II controlled substance.
Joseph Stromayer: introduction of contraband, conspiracy to introduce contraband, conspiracy to commit perjury, third-degree assault, intimidating a witness, and conspiracy to intimidate a witness.
Rachel Stromayer: conspiracy to intimidate a witness.
