All three Gunnison County Commissioners are could face a special recall election if enough signatures are acquired. Crested Butte News writes that Robert Allen, Betty Eberhard, and Alex Laird are representing those who sign the petitions. Gunnison County Clerk Stella Dominguez approved the petition paperwork last week. The petition for recalls are in regards to the Commissioners voting for the decision to build a jail near the county fairgrounds. The committee (the three names listed above) have 60 days (from March 16, 2010) to collect 2,100 each for commissioners Hap Channell and Paula Swenson, and 1,500 signatures for commissioner Jim Starr. According to the petition, “The officeholder has taken action to cause construction of a new Gunnison County Jail. This action by the officeholder is in defiance of the United States Declaration of Independence, The United States Constitution, The State of Colorado Constitution and The Sovereign Citizens of Gunnison County, Colorado who voted no on the new jail proposals…” If the recall happens, it would operate like a general election. The Commissioners have declined comment at this time.
