Yesterday afternoon, firecrews responded to a home on the Redlands that was engulfed in flames. According to the Grand Junction Fire Dept. the house was unoccupied at the time and no other structures appeared to be in danger.  KJCT explains that firefighters had a challenge in putting out the blaze since a nearby electrical wire hampered their response time and securing water was also difficult.  But they were able to get the fire under control and crews are now cleaning up…

In a developing story a fatal accident involving a motorcycle by the Mesa Mall took place earlier today. Just before 11am a man riding a motorcycle pulled onto 24 ½ Road from the Mesa Mall parking lot when a driver in a pickup truck hit him.  The cyclist died at the scene.  Based on the information police have receive there may have been two other motorcycle riders behind him, as well as a driver of a brown sedan who was coming out of the Carmike Theater parking lot.  Pickup driver was not injured.  The identity of  the man killed in the crash has not been released pending the Mesa County Coroner’s report.

Colorado’s embattled Republican gubernatorial candidate is firing back at critics who say he’s unfit for office. The Durango Herald says that a defiant Dan Maes told a group in Durango yesterday that the political process is surrounded by “evil”.  He based that on the accusations made against him including the scandals that have plague his campaign and his campaign finance violations.  He claims Colorado’s campaign finance laws “ridiculous” and is calling this race for governor as a “spiritual battle”.  He’s expected to be in Grand Junction Sunday to debate with Democrat candidate John Hickenlooper…..

A man was struck and killed by a car this morning as he tried to  cross Highway 141 riding an all-terrain vehicle. The State Patrol explained to the Daily Sentinel that Mark Miller was on a 6 wheel John Deere Gator as he tried to go across the highway two miles south of Gateway when the ATV was hit by a Buick Regal driven by Curt Carver of Nucla.  Miller was thrown from his ATV and pronounced dead at the scene.  State Patrol officials say that speed, drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors.  The stretch of that highway where the accident took place has a posted speed limit sign of 55 mph….

Telluride Adaptive Sports has a two-fold opportunity for supporters to play some golf, donate to a good cause and walk away with some great auction items. According to the Daily Planet Telluride Adaptive Sports (TASP) will host the Bob Miller Memorial Golf Classic for the 12th year in a row on Thur. Sept. 16th. At the Telluride Golf Club in Mountain Village.  And during the next week TASP will also hold an online silent auction featuring local art and jewelry as well as some attractive sports and recreation packages.  The golf tournament is in memory of Bob Miller, the husband of one of TASP’s founding board members.
