An arrest has been made in the death of a 4-month-old Montrose boy. Last night Maria Zavala-Almanza (AKA: Maria Espinosa-Zavala) was arrested by Montrose PD on suspcion of manslaughter. She’s facing a $25,000 bond.
On Thursday afternoon, October 7, 2010, Angel Nieto, a 4-month old male infant was brought to the emergency room of Montrose Memorial Hospital by the Montrose Ambulance Service. The child was unconscious and in critical condition. He was transferred by air to the Children’s Hospital in Denver. Despite intensive care treatment, he was declared brain dead on Saturday morning, October 9, 2010 and pronounced dead at 12:05 p.m. the same day.
The death is considered suspicious and is being investigated further by the Montrose County Coroner’s Office of Medical Investigations and the Montrose Police Department. The autopsy was performed by an Adams County Coroner since that’s where Nieto’s death was ruled. Below is the ruling of the coroner:
In the matter of Angel Nieto and based upon the results of the Autopsy Report released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office, the Montrose County Coroner has reached the following conclusions: The cause of death was non-accidental trauma. The manner of death is homicide.
