Woman Jailed in Montrose, Now in Hands of ICE

MONTROSE – A woman who was facing murder charges of a 4-month-old Montrose baby last year was released from Montrose County Jail to the custody of federal immigration officials. According to the Daily Sentinel, Maria Espinosa-Zavala had been behind bars since December 29th without bond until March 31st, when the charges of 1st Degree Murder and Child Abuse Resulting in Death were dismissed without prejudice.

Zavala, who is using an alias, is currently being held in the El Paso County Jail. She was babysitting Angel Nieto on October 7, 2010 when the boy suffered injuries that took his life two days later at Children’s Hospital in Denver. The investigation into baby Angel remains ongoing.
