The State House had a big discussion concerning House Bill 1014, a bill that would reduce vehicle late fees to $25. Many testified on the bill, most opposing it. As a result Sen Steve King suggested a few changes in the bill. One is returning the late fee to a maximum of $100 where it is now if too many motorists register their vehicles late because of the lower fines. Initially, former Gov. Bill Ritter introduced the increase in late fees to help generate more money for road projects. Since that late fee was put into place the number of late registrations has been cut significantly.
