At today’s joint county/city session, it was reported that contractors are hoping to have the broadbanding network up and running in Montrose by Aug. The city and other independent agencies along with DMEA are coordinating the process. County Manager Jesse Smith was concerned about the target date of August, thinking it may be rushed a little. However, he was told many of the fibers are in place and about ready to go. The main focus of the this broadband network is faster and more reliable communication, first among schools, then the government. If any excess material is left over it can be used for private business enterprises. The ultimate goal is to have the network stretch from Grand Junction to Durango and eventually Albuquerque and Denver.
