Tuesday night during the City Council meeting, Sandy Head, executive director of MEDC, asked council to help in retaining a business which has been in the area for about 25 years. Ms. Head explains the business wished to remain anonymous to protect its employees. They have also asked for a confidentiality agreement between them and the council. This news brought mixed reviews among the councilors. As a temporarily solution until all the facts are known Mayor Smits had proposed appropriating $18 thousand, available to the MEDC, which initially was for administrative costs, for the retention of this company. The business employees 22 with an average salary of about $53 thousand a year. The councilors took no action but agreed to continue discussions. Sandy Head said she has already secured some funding from the state and will approach the County Commissioners on Monday during their next regular meeting.
