The West Nile virus was detected in Delta County last week. Samples of mosquitoes from the Surface Creek area and another sample from near Paonia all returned positive results for the West Nile Virus. No cases of the virus have been detected in humans or in horses, but officials are on edge saying that this is an early start to the West Nile season, which usually starts in August. To help lower the risk of getting the virus, be sure to drain any standing water on your property, and avoid going outside at dusk or dawn when the mosquito activity is at its highest. Also, look for DEET in your bugspray, it is the most effective mosquito repellent. For more information head to www.fightthebitecolorado.com
