BLM Shuts Down Lands Burned by Pine Ridge Fire

The lands burned by the Pine Ridge fire near DeBeque have been closed down by the Bureau of Land Management. BLM Officials are worried about the stability of the soil after the 14,000 acre fire. The biggest risk on those lands is the possibility of rock or mud slides. A rock slide could shut down I-70 as well as the railroad, effectively cutting off the western slope from transportation. The closure is effective until at least next July, which will have an impact on recreation in the area. BLM officials say that violations of the closure could come with a fine of up to $1,000 and possible jail time.
