A gunman opened fire on the viewing audience for the midnight showing of the Dark Knight Rises, the latest installment in Director Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise. The gunman was identified as 24 year old CU Denver Medical Student James Holmes and was taken into custody behind the theater. Holmes allegedly kicked in the back emergency door of the theater and threw a tear gas grenade, filling the theater with smoke. Holmes then entered wearing body armor and a gas mask, armed with an assault rifle, 12 ga. shotgun and two handguns. 10 of the victims died in the theater and a further two died at hospitals. 38 were injured, the youngest was three months old. Three of the victims were members of the military, two in the Air Force and one in the Navy. When arrested, Holmes alluded to explosives in his apartment. More than 100 FBI agents are at his apartment complex investigating the explosives, and they say the apartment is booby trapped by a sophisticated device. Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates says it could be hours, even days until the apartment is disarmed. Holmes is apparently not cooperating with police in their investigations.
