There have been two reported deaths from West Nile Virus this year in Montrose County alone. The two deaths are the first reported in Colorado in two years, and there are 33 cases of the virus reported in the state. About half those cases are in Delta County, where there are seventeen reported infections. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment says that there were only seven reported cases last year and no deaths. Officials say the best way to prevent the virus is to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. Clear any standing water, wear long sleeves and pants and use insect repellents with DEET.
