John Otto Monument Vandalized Again

For at least the third time the John Otto Rock mounted in front of the Museum of the West in Downtown Grand Junction has been vandalized. Apparently the vandals have taken exception to the swastikas that are engraved on the stone. Those were carved into the stone in 1915 at the request of John Otto. Initially the swastika was an ancient symbol representing good luck. That was years before the Nazis adopted that symbol for their sinister use. Museum officials say that the swastika used by Otto is different than the Nazi because his is turned a quarter to the left.
