The two former State troopers who were on trial for Redland’s resident Jason Kemp’s death and then recently fired have been given their final payments. Both Ivan “Gene” Lawyer and Kirk Firko received just over $10 thousand each. This accounts for last regular salary and accrued vacation. According to the Daily Sentinel, both troopers had been receiving a regular salary while they were placed administrative leave. They were placed on that paid leave soon after the shooting death of Jason Kemp. That is standard procedure for most law enforcement agencies. Both Lawyer and Firko were indicted in Oct. 2010 and Lawyer was later found not guilty. The D.A.’s office also declined to prosecute a 2nd time and dismissed the case because they had similar evidence against Firko.
