With the housing industry being as tough as it is a new scam has caught the attention of Mesa County law enforcement. It basically focuses on renters. How it works is predators go looking for what appears to be abandoned or foreclosed property, break in, change the locks, then look for victims who are in the market for a home. Once they find someone they ask for cash up front as down payment and first two months rent. Later the suspect flees leaving no way to contact them and when the real owner shows up they are forced to put up an eviction notice because they never received payment. Authorities have warned the public to never deal with someone who demands cash only and has no way of contacting them.
