Charges have been officially filed against Kristen Chesnik, former finance officer of Paonia. Chesnik now faces one count of theft over $20 thousand, a Class 3 felony. An annual review of the town’s finances found that Chesnik had defrauded Paonia over $625 thousand in a two year period. The CPA firm Blair and Associates found more than $200 thousand missing in 2010 and last week, an audit showed a loss of $401- thousand for 2011 due to employee fraud. There is now some tension among council members as they try to prepare the 2013 budget. Chesnik’s case is set for arraignment for Nov. 28th.
