Alumni Night for Montrose Wrestling was a little sweeter Thursday night after the Indians rallied for a 39-30 win over Fruita Monument.  The Indians trailed the Wildcats 27-18 after 9 matches, but then won 5 straight weight classes to claim the victory.

7 of the first 9 matches were pins, starting at 138 pounds with Matt Sandoval getting a victory for Montrose in 1:39.  Ethan Davis and Joe Sandoval both lost, but Marcus Velasquez got an injury default win at 160 pounds.  Royal Haulman got pinned but 1st year Senior David Schroeter stuck his Wildcat opponent in 3:53 after trailing to give Montrose an 18-15 lead.  Fruita came back with consecutive pins over Davis Power and Allen Teime giving the Wildcats a 27-18 lead.  That’s when the Indians put together 5 consecutive victories starting with heavyweight Jesus Casillas recording the fastest pin of the night in just :43.

At 106 pounds, Terrell Banuelos won 7-2.  Emmanual Sandoval had his hands full at 113, but got an escape with 10 seconds left for a 1-0 win, giving Montrose a 30-27 lead they would never give up.  JV wrestler Chase Harding was moved up to wrestle at 120 pounds and stuck his man in 2:39 for a 36-27 lead for the Indians.  The team victory was secured at 126, after Jeremiah Banuelos won 5-1.  Caden Kahle finished out the night with a 13-6 loss making the final score 39-30 in favor of Montrose.

The Indians have performed very well lately winning their last 3 duals over Pueblo West, Alameda and now Fruita Monument.  Combine that with a 3rd place finish at their own Invite and the team championship at the Alameda Tournament last weekend and this young Montrose Wrestling team is on a roll.  Next up is the final home dual of the season next Thursday January 31st against Grand Junction.  The JV’s start at 6pm followed by the Varsity at 7pm, which will be broadcast on AM 580 KUBC.

The remaining schedule for Montrose has the Indians going to the Discovery Canyon Dual Tournament Feb 2 and the League Duals at Central February 9.  Regional Wrestling begins February 15 at Montrose High School.
