Montrose Mayor Thomas Smits presents John Zarkis with his award

Public Improvement Inspector/Stormwater Coordinator John Zarkis and Finance Director Shani Wittenberg have been recognized for their outstanding service to the City of Montrose.  At a recent awards ceremony, John Zarkis was honored as the city’s 2012 Employee of the Year and Shani Wittenberg received the Manager’s Excellence in Service Award.

John has worked in his current position since 2010, taking a leading role in several large infrastructure projects.  Most recently, he oversaw Phase II of the Airport Trunk Sewer Line, a complex project that completed a 30-inch sewer line connection across the Montrose Regional Airport. The project won a 2012 American Public Works Association award.

His nomination stated, “John consistently goes above and beyond to keep projects on schedule and coordinates city crews to help get the job done.  John remains calm when faced with adversity and is a great team player.”

The Manager’s Excellence in Service Award, inaugurated this year, recognizes city employees who extend themselves well beyond their normal job duties in an effort to make the City of Montrose a better organization.

“Shani has put in many long hours away from home to make sure that her department performs at a very high level, day in and day out,” said City Manager Bill Bell.  “She has had to work through a difficult transition process, as her department has experienced many staffing changes over the past year.  She has found a way to do her own job, in addition to training several co-workers at their new positions.  Her employees have stated that she is a delight to work with and that they truly appreciate the support they have received over the past year.”
