Many Area Wrestlers Going to State Championships

Jesus Casillas led Montrose with a heavyweight region title.  He will be joined at state by teammates Terrell Banuelos (106), Matt Sandoval (138) and Marcus Velasquez (160) were runners-up; and Emmanuel Sandoval (113) placed fourth.  

The Olathe Pirates have 6 wrestlers at State. Austin Shank at 113 pounds, Trenton Piatt at 120 and Jacob Solseth at 132 all won Regional Titles over the past weekend.  Junior Trenton Piatt is the top ranked wrestler at 113 and is 40-0 this year.  Tommy Brew at 285 is also going to State.

Delta qualified 6 wrestlers for state, and 5 are going for the first time. Shane Anderson is the only returning state qualifier.  Seniors Hunter Brasfield, Alfredo Rosales and Kyle Collins are making their first trip in their final year.

Paonia is sending 13 qualifiers to state out of 14 weight classes as it seeks a 2nd straight Team wrestling title for coach Andy Pipher.  Sophomore Josh Altman (36-3) at 113 pounds;  Sophomore Jesse Reed at 120 after winning state at 113 last year; Freshman Bo Pipher at 126 is 35-4; Sophomore Gunner Chesnik is 27-12 this year at 138; Junior William Austin at 170 pounds is 24-6 as he goes to state for the 1st time after spending the last half of his sophomore season on the junior varsity.  Senior Tyler Kendall at 195 is (27-4) and also making his first trip to state.  After spending his freshman and sophomore wrestling seasons on junior varsity, Kendall decided to play basketball as a junior.  Other Eagle wrestlers going to Denver are Sophomore Joel Simianer at 220 with a 27-10 record and junior Tony Darling at 285 is 32-1 on the season; Senior Jorge Quinonez at 160 and 4-time state qualifier Morgan Reider, who placed second at state a year ago and is 30-3 this year.

Other area State Qualifiers include:  Cedaredge 106-pounder Austin Todd, Hotchkiss’s Joe Boyle at 145 and Zack Taylor at 285.
