One day after winning by 30 strokes, the Montrose High School girls golf team was at it again, winning the nine-team Black Canyon Invitational by 26 strokes Thursday.
Kala Keltz led four Indians who placed in the top six, firing a medalist-winning 77 to outpace runner-up Taylor Walters of Rifle by four strokes. In the meet at Devil’s Thumb Golf Club in Delta on Wednesday, Walters was the medalist with a 73, two strokes better than Keltz.
“I’m really happy with the way Kala’s playing,” Montrose assistant coach Dave Woodruff said. “She was over in Denver playing basketball Saturday night (for the Indians in a Class 4A state quarterfinal). She got off the bus on Sunday and went to the golf course, practicing.”
Chelsea Peterson finished third for Montrose with an 86 on Thursday, and teammates Madison Gill and Justine Johnson were in a three-way tie for sixth place at 90.
Palisade had one golfer crack the top 10 as Kate Shuman finished fourth with an 88. Central’s lone entrant in the top 10 was Sam Medina, who shot a 91 to finish ninth.
Joining Walters in the top 10 for Rifle was Alyx Carter, who was 10th with a 92.
Although Montrose opened the season with wins in both of its tournaments, Woodruff said there’s room for improvement.
“It’s early in the season, and you’re not going to have your game all sharp, like chipping and putting,” he said.
