U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor to Meet with 100 Students May 2

The Colorado Judicial Branch announced today that 100 8th, 9th and 10thgraders from across Colorado have been selected by the Colorado Youth Advisory Council to meet with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor on May 2, 2013, as a part of the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center dedication celebration.  Logan Strong, an 8th grader at Naturita Middle School in Nucla is among the students.  

Participants were selected by the Colorado Youth Advisory Council, which includes four members of the General Assembly and 40 youth members from across the state. One student was selected from each House and Senate district and students will also have the opportunity to meet their state senator and representative.  The event is free for the selected students and need-based scholarships for mileage and lodging have been made available through the Colorado Judicial Institute and El Pomar Foundation.Justice Sotomayor will meet with the students, talk with them about her life and experiences and answer their questions. The student event will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. in the atrium of the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center (2 E. 14th Ave., Denver, CO 80203) before the public dedication ceremony scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

The Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center was named in honor of Ralph L. Carr, who was Colorado’s 29th Governor and who was widely famed for opposing Japanese-American internment camps during World War II.  The Judicial Center is home to the Colorado Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, Supreme Court Law Library, Office of the State Court Administrator and other law-related offices such as the Attorney General and Public Defender, serving the people of the State of Colorado.
