MHS NJROTC Earns Top Honors

Montrose High School Naval Junior Reserve Training Corps has earned the Distinguished Unit Award with Honors for the 2012-2013 school year.  In essence this identifies the unit as being in the top 10% of the units in the program and only 8% receive the award with “Honors” based on academic proficiency.  This award encompasses a wide spectrum of achievements and accomplishments, not just the annual inspection.  The following areas are taken into consideration for the award:

-          Provided over 2300 hrs of community service hours to the Montrose community

-          40% of the cadet population is at a 3.0 GPA or higher

-          30% of the Cadet Corp made the Honor Roll

-          Cadets have provided over 100 Color guards to the school and community

-          Placed 2nd in the Secretary of the Navy Marksmanship competition out of 486 teams

-          Organized and hosted a NJROTC leadership course during the summer that lasted one week and involved 36 cadets from 4 different schools.

-          Presented an opportunity for over 80 cadets over the summer for an NJROTC orientation course for incoming Freshman

-          Directly supported an NJROTC Sailing Academy in New Mexico during the Summer

-          Organized a 1 week physical fitness and drill camp for 30 cadets over the summer

-          Provided 5 Cadets with Scholarships to attend College

-          Sent 1 Cadet to the U.S. Naval Academy

-          Supported 10 Cadets in School leadership positions(i.e., STUCO, FFA, Boy Scouts, and sports)

-          Attended two State Drill Meets and awarded 1st place in many events

-          Competed in 5 different Brain Brawl competitions and placed in all

-          Scored in the top 30% in the nation on the National Academic Exam

-          Is an active member of Colorado STEM extending training to the middle schools, i.e. SeaPerch

-          The cadets are involved  in just about every sport team, and organization within the school arena
