Up to eight homeless people are now without so much as basic shelter after a fire gutted a detached garage they were sleeping in on Pitkin Avenue in Grand Junction just before 11 p.m. Thursday night.

Grand Junction Fire Fighter Mike Page says six Units and 20 fire fighting personnel were dispatched to the blaze and were able to get it knocked down quickly.  Page says that all of the occupants who were inside the building when the fire ignited escaped without serious injury.  Fire fighters were able to prevent the inferno from spreading to nearby structures.  Damage to the garage is estimated at $4-thousand.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
