Grand Junction authorities shut down Orchard Avenue for 1-hour Tuesday night when a structure fire enveloped a gas meter just before 11 p.m.  Fire fighter John Williams says 15 fire fighters were dispatched and arrived at the blaze just moments after the first call came in.

Williams says that luckily the home was vacant when firefighters arrived.  Fire fighters also strategically placed themselves around adjacent homes and structures to create a protective line and prevent the flames from spreading.  Excel Energy operators also shut off gas to the house.  Fire fighters were able to gain the upper hand on the blaze and were able to extinguish it before the inferno spread to the inside of the home.  There were no injuries and the precise cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
