Highway-50 is closed in both directions at Canon City due to a 3800-acre fire burning near Royal Gorge.  A National Forest spokesperson says the fire was first reported at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.  The blaze started on the south side of river and spotted to the north side. The fire is actively burning on BLM, state and private lands.

Mandatory Evacuations are in effect from Parkdale to the Canon City Water treatment plant, north of the Royal Gorge.  Again, U.S. Highway 50 is closed in both directions from the Canon City Water treatment plant (1st Street) to Highway 9. Temple Canyon road has also been closed.  The Arkansas River has been closed from Spike Buck through Canon City. The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park has been evacuated.

Motorists travelling east on Highway-50 from Montrose can still reach the front range by diverting off of Highway-50 onto Highway-285 at Poncha Springs, and then onto Highway-24 at Johnson Village, near Buena Vista.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
