Country Magazine has just named Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park as one of the top 10 hidden gems in America’s National Park System. The article describes Black Canyon as one of the most dramatic places in the country. Black Canyon National Park and Curecanti National Recreation Area spokesperson Sandy Snell-Dobert says she first heard about the magazine piece from her own mother who subscribes to Country Magazine.
Dobert says the schedule of ranger led walks and talks at Black Canyon National Park is being finalized this week.
The unique gaping chasm is worthy of the attention. With colorful features like the “Painted Rocks” area along the south rim, towering walls of black schist spanning 2-thousand feet above the Gunnison River, and vast open desert and less crowded conditions along the North Rim, the park draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area each year.
