The Meals on Wheels program delivers hundreds of hot meals to seniors every day along the Western Slope but now funding for the program is in jeopardy. While federal funding for the program has declined it’s the double whammy of financially struggling municipalities simultaneously cutting funding for the program that has coordinators worried about the prospect of keeping the meals rolling. Volunteers of America-Senior Community Meals Program Director Deana Sheriff says the meals delivered to area seniors squeaking by on a fixed income is sometimes the only meal they eat that day.
Another positive aspect of the program is the contact with another human being seniors experience when meals are delivered. Some elderly participants in the program are all alone, unable to drive, and would have minimal to nonexistent contact with others without Meals on Wheels.
