The deadline draws near for residents in the First District in Montrose to submit an application to be considered to fill a vacancy on the City Council. The vacancy occurred in June when former Mayor Thomas Smits resigned. The Montrose City Council is comprised of 5-members, including the Mayor. Of the 5-seats on Council 4 represent a specific voting ‘district’ in the city and 1 is an at large seat. The at large seat is currently held by Mayor Judy Ann Files. Whoever is selected to fill the vacancy will serve the remainder of Smits’ term which ends in April, 2014. City Clerk Lisa DelPiccolo says applicants must reside in the city’s First District in order to be considered for the position.
She adds that applicants will be interviewed during the first Council Work Session in August and will likely be selected during the next regularly scheduled meeting.
Whoever is chosen to represent the First District will have to successfully run for the seat if they wish to remain on the dais once Smits’ term is up.
