A 70-year old Montrose man charged with sexual assault on a young girl has apparently jumped to his death at Montrose County Jail.  Montrose County Media Relations Manager Katy Yergensen says Michael Thrash was in the ‘Common Area’ of the detention facility when he wandered to the jail’s second tier landing.  Ignoring orders from detention facility personnel, Thrash threw his legs over the railing and jumped.  Yergensen says Jail medical personnel and deputies were on the scene within seconds.  Thrash was taken to Montrose Memorial Hospital before being transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.

Thrash was arrested 2-years ago after allegedly inappropriately touching a 9-year old Montrose girl.  He was being charged with sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust at the time of his death.  Montrose County Coroner Dr. Thomas Canfield is conducting an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.
