A dump truck driver was issued numerous citations after the fully loaded truck he was driving lost its brakes and ended up in Skunk Creek in San Miguel County. A Sheriff’s Department spokesperson says the driver was travelling from Ophir to Mountain Village when the brakes gave out. He missed the turn to Mountain Village and was able to slow the vehicle down but not stop it. The driver steered the vehicle into Skunk Creek to avoid colliding in the Lawson Hill Subdivision. When officers arrived on scene they discovered the driver did not have a commercial license and the vehicle was devoid of current registration and insurance. The fuel in the vehicle that was now spilling into the creek was dyed red, meaning it wasn’t legal for highway use.
Emergency responders with the Telluride Fire Department arrived speedily on scene and conducted Haz-Mat operations and cleanup of the scene. The driver was not injured in the accident.
