A Grand Junction engineering firm will pay a 100-thousand-dollar fine in what will likely be the end of government penalties in the 2007 Crandall Canyon mine collapse in Utah.  Agapito Associates has agreed to pay the civil penalty for what the U.S. Labor Department called “high negligence” in an agreement announced yesterday.  The federal government determined that a flawed engineering assessment by Agapito led to an inadequate design at Crandall Canyon that ultimately led to the death of eight people.  Two subsidiaries of Utah American Energy have already agreed to nearly a million dollars in civil penalties in the collapse.
