The Denver Post is reporting the man believed to have shot Colorado Trooper Eugene Hofacker is a convicted killer from Montrose. According to a spokeswoman from the Colorado Department of Corrections, 40 year old Thomas Ornelas, allegedly shot the state patrolman. The Garfield County Sheriff Office confirmed that Ornelas was killed when a second trooper returned fire. Authorities said Hofacker and another trooper stopped to assist a motorist pulled over on westbound I-70 near the Dotsero exit . At the time of Thursday’s shooting, Ornelas was out on bond in a case out of Mesa County. He pled not guilty to nine counts, including two counts of attempted second-degree murder. He was scheduled to go to trial in September. State Records reveal Ornelas served time in Denver on a murder conviction in 1991.
