CDOT is urging people to buckle up, as the number of highway deaths around Colorado is on the rise. As of September 20th, 423 people had died in crashes this year, which compared to 415 at the same time in 2015. Nearly 150 of the 2016 crash victims were not using seat belts.

Fire officials for the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests plan to conduct the Little Monitor Prescribed Burn (Units 1-3), beginning Wednesday, September 28. The Little Monitor Project site is located north of the 25 Mesa Guard Station, approximately 26 miles west of Montrose and about 23 miles southwest of Delta, CO. The burn area is located at the junction of 25 Mesa (NFSR #503) and Cottonwood Roads (NFSR #504).

At Montrose Memorial Hospital’s 45th annual Fall Clinics event on Friday September 23, two individuals were recognized for their outstanding contribution to the community.
The Fall Clinics Physician of the Year award went to Dr. David Dreitlein. A Board-Certified physician specializing in Emergency Medicine at Montrose Memorial Hospital, Dr. Dreitlein was recognized by the Fall Clinics committee based on a number of criteria, including innovative care, continuing education, ongoing contributions to quality medical care, and more.
Dr. Dreitlein provides leadership for many important positions inside and out of the hospital. Dr. Dreitlein was recognized for his work with the State Emergency Medical and Trauma Services Advisory Council, CareFlight medical services, Maslow Academy, Emergency Services Medical Director, and is past chief of staff at MMH. His leadership is instrumental in ensuring the excellent quality of care in the region’s emergency medicine.More

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office says it has found no sign of a man who been missing since last Friday. Scott Burke of Craig left for a camping trip that day and did not return. The Sheriff's Office, the Civil Air Patrol and the Bureau of Land Management are cooperating to search the areas where Burke was supposed to be camping.

San Miguel Power Associations says residents claim the new LED street lights, installed in Nucla, Naturita, Norwood and Rico are defective. SMPA replaced these fixtures with extras that it had in stock. SMPA says the failing lights were the result of a manufacturing defect that occurred in the products sold to the towns at the time.

|Truck Accident Highway 550 Near Colona|

The Telluride Fire Protection District’s HAZMAT response team was dispatched overnight Friday to assist Montrose Fire Protection District with a head on collision involving a fuel tanker in Montrose county.
The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) is investigating the incident involving the collision of a semi-tanker truck hauling 7,500 gallons of diesel fuel and a pick-up truck at mile marker 114 on US Highway 550 in the Colona area just outside of Montrose. CSP states that the collision, which occurred at approximately 2:51am Friday, resulted in the tanker rolling off of the roadway.

|The odds of you hitting a deer or other large animal such as an elk or moose on Colorado roads are up this year. State Farm puts those odds at one in 263, which is up 16-percent from last year. Those numbers are compiled from claims data, as well as accounts from the Federal Highway Administration. |
