A local man was indicted by a federal grand jury on Wednesday on a bank fraud charge in connection with a $300 million scheme that spans major American banks. The Daily Planet has revealed that Shahin Kashanchi, who owns Blue Gecko Inc. in Telluride was arrested on bank fraud charges for his alleged involvement in a massive defrauding operation. He allegedly helped his brother-in-law defraud 3 major banks. Those 3 banks include Citibank, HSBC, and Bank of America. According to a report from the U.S. Attorney’s in New York Kashanchi’s brother-in-law, Hassan Nemazee, was using fraudulent documents, including phony account statements and phony correspondence bearing forged signatures to bilk these institutions of millions of dollars. For Kashanchi’s part if he’s convicted he could face up to 30 years in prison and fines up to $1 million.

The Ouray Ranger District of the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests is considering a proposal to develop/refine camping facilities at the Columbine Pit area on the Uncompahgre Plateau through the addition of certain facilities. Throughout 2008, the Public Lands Partnership (PLP) in cooperation with the Forest Service, sponsored a visitor use survey on the Plateau to identify use patterns, needs and desired recreation amenities of forest users. The survey was conducted by Colorado State University and resulted in a lot of “good data and information” which helped form the basis of the proposal for the Columbine Pit area.

Charlie Sheen made an appearance this morning in an Aspen courtroom for what turned out to be brief proceedings. The Daily Sentinel says that during those proceeding prosecutors brought formal charges against Sheen including felony menacing in connection with his Christmas Day domestic violence arrest in Aspen. The judge did lift the no-contact order at the request of both Sheen and his wife. If convicted, Sheen could face a presumptive prison sentence of 1 to 3 years and two years of mandatory parole…..

A Rifle based gasoline wholesaler and retailer is working to open a fueling station in western Colorado for vehicles that run on compressed natural gas. KJCT reports that Swallow Oil has applied to the town of Parachute for zoning approval to open such a station in that town. Swallow also applied for a grant from the Governor’s Energy Office to open another station just like that in Rifle.. The company is expecting the cost of putting up just one of those stations to be at least $700 thousand dollars….
