Wounded State Patrolman Released

The Colorado State patrolman who was shot twice during a traffic stop in Glenwood Canyon earlier this month has been released from the Hospital. The Aspen Times is reporting Eugene Hofacker is continuing to recover. The suspect, Thomas Ornelas of Montrose was shot and killed by trooper Shane Gosnell at the scene on May 8.

Transgender Students Becoming Common

Public schools nationwide are working to accommodate transgender students even if their school districts do not have policies that address gender identity. Chipeta Closed

Montrose County will close Chipeta Road between West Main Street/Highway 90 to Fruit Park Road on Wednesday, May 21 from 8 to 5 and again on Friday, May 23, from 8:00 to 5:00 for asphalt paving purposes.  You’ll be required to use alternate routes during those time frames.

Bear Mauls Pigs

A Bear mauled several pigs at a Norwood area farm. San Miguel Deputies and wildlife officers were contacted by the Kaikaus Ranch Saturday night at around 8:30. Authorities say the Bear charged two adults during the attack. No injuries were reported. The surly bear was found by authorities and put down.

Killer Bees Found

KKCO is reporting killer bees have been discovered in Palisade. A Palisade fruit grower noticed a hive was being overly aggressive and brought it into the Tri River Area Extension office. Ute Museum Expansion

The Ute Indian Museum in Montrose is getting a facelift. According to a press release, the Colorado General Assembly approved 2 point 4 million dollars for Capital Construction. Grand Junction based Chamberlain Architects will configure the project. Construction should begin next year.

New Memorial Bench

Wednesday morning at  11:45, Step Up to L.I.F.E. will install a Memorial bench to honor Paraprofessional Mary Hinkson. This will be on  Park Ave at 6th St in Montrose. Hinkson worked with the Step Up To L.I.F.E., a program, helping young people with disabilities.

Bear Sighting Reported

There was a reported Bear sighting in the 12200 block of 6530 road near Montrose last night at around 7:00. Authorities advise you keep your garbage and compost enclosed, bird feeders should be brought in, don’t leave pet food outside and you may want burn off the grease on your BBQ grill.   

Animal Cruelty on Amber Road

A Montrose County couple returned to their Amber Road home Saturday to find one of their dogs missing and their other dog dead. The Denver Post is reporting the man believed to have shot Colorado Trooper Eugene Hofacker is a convicted killer from Montrose. According to a spokeswoman from the Colorado Department of Corrections, 40 year old Thomas Ornelas, allegedly shot the state patrolman. A state trooper was shot and injured During a traffic stop in East Garfield County near mile marker 129 on Interstate 70 this morning just after 9.  The Trooper has been transported to the Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs and is listed in critical but stable condition.
