Stephen Tullos is the new Montrose County Health and Human Services Director. Tullos will oversee all programs to include Adult Services, Child Welfare, Eligibility, Child Support, Nurse Family Partnership, Health Programs (Family Planning, WIC, Immunizations), Environment Health and Emergency Preparedness & Response.

Under Colorado law, county assessors’ offices throughout the state conduct a complete revaluation of all properties in their county every two years. The Colorado Legislature sets the appraisal date, the market sales data collection period, and the annual calendar for the assessment process.

The Montrose County fairgrounds are expanding to the east. County Commissioners voted to buy a Stonybrook Subdivision lot from Nancy Turley for just under 29,000 plus closing costs. County
planning director Steve White says the property will improve access to the forthcoming event center.
The lot is on the east side of north Stough Avenue.

Former Montrose County Commissioner David White told KUBC that assistant county manager Dave Laursen may be the next casualty of the new commissioner administration. Last week Commissioners Roger Rash and Keith Caddy terminated the contract of county Attorney Teresa Williams. The commissioners did not cite a reason for the termination.

Per Montrose County Press Release:
On Saturday, October 29, 2016, hunters in the Sawmill Mesa area of the Uncompahgre Plateau west of Montrose reported the finding of skeletal material believed to be human remains. The Montrose County Sheriff’s Office and the Montrose County Coroner's Office of Medical Investigations with the help of the Montrose County Sheriff’s Posse recovered bones and fragments of clothing. A forensic autopsy was ordered by Montrose County Coroner Dr. Thomas M. Canfield, MD and performed by Dr. Michael Benziger, MD at the Montrose Memorial Hospital Forensic Laboratory. The bones were considered consistent, but not definitive, as those of Gerry “Hoop” Reed, a 56 year-old male of Nucla, Colo.

|Commissioners Mulling Event Center Review|

Montrose County Commissioners are considering hiring Denver law firm to get an opinion of the already approved Events Center. The previous county board approved the Event center in November however, new commissioners Roger Rash and Keith Caddy are not sold on plan due in part to public outcry.

The Montrose County Sheriff’s Office wants your help to find the thieves that stole from the Road and Bridge location on North Second Street in Montrose. Between December 6th and December 8th, somebody cut the fence to access a locked trailer. Over $5,000 worth of tools, extension cords, chainsaws, and a generator, were taken. More

Construction of a multi purpose event center was approved by Montrose county commissions this week. Commissioners voted 2 to 1 (at a well attended board meeting) for Ridgway Valley to build a 93,000 square foot arena that will cost 8.5 million dollars plus interest. Proponents say the arena will boost tourism. The issue has come under fire from critics including incoming commissioner Keith Caddy who claims it is not a necessity.

|Road and Bridge is getting a Facility.|

Montrose county commissioners voted 2 to 1 to construct a new Road and Bridge facility at their LaSalle road property on the north end of Montrose. Ridgway Valley will design and build The 9.1 million dollar complex. The funding for the project will come from certificates of participation and the capital improvement fund.

|Deputy Identified in West End Shooting|

The deputy in the officer-involved shooting is a three-year veteran with the Montrose County Sheriff's Office. Deputy Bruce Schmalz is currently on paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation from the Seventh Judicial District's Critical Incident Team, which is standard procedure for any officer-involved shooting. The Montrose County Sheriff's Office is also conducting an internal investigation, which is standard procedure for any officer response-to-resistance situation.
