Telluride Gets Another Festival For Late Aug.

TELLURIDE - Yet another festival is planned for Telluride late this summer. Last night at the town council meeting, unanimous approval was given to put on a 2 day music festival in Town Park, Aug 25-26. Specific details about the lineup and number of acts have not yet been determined. The event is set to take place between the Telluride stage of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge and the Telluride Film Festival. The primary purpose for this event is to try to capitalize on the crowds and media that will already be on hand for the Pro Cycling Challenge. The town council had been looking for ways to booster tourism during the late summer days, when things are usually a bit slow, and now they’ve got 2 events to look forward to…..

3 Teenagers Survive Blizzard in Routt Nat’l Forest

CRAIG - On Sunday three teenagers got stuck overnight in a blizzard but managed to survive by burning what they could find, including their snowmobile. The boys got stuck in the Routt National Forest while on a snowmobiling trip. The boys were supposed to return from their trip by 5pm Sunday but their snowmobiles got stuck in 2 to 3 feet of snow. Rescue crews eventually got to the boys the next morning and they were all okay. Two of the young men were treated for minor injuries but then released….

GPS Tracking Devices on Some Vehicles

GRAND JUNCTION - You’ve heard of big brother watching you? Well, in the Grand Valley if you purchase an automobile from one of those buy here pay here lots they could be keep an eye on you. Some of these car lots are installing GPS tracking systems on their vehicles because they are concerned about the high risk loans they’re making and trying to track their merchandise. One dealership manager says that as long as people pay their loans on time they shouldn’t even worry about the device in their car. The staff only employees the system when someone becomes delinquent in their payments. This growing trend of GPS tracking systems in vehicles are leaving some customers concerned about their privacy….

First Presidential Debate to be Held in Denver

The University of Denver was chosen as the site for the first presidential debate in October. On Wednesday, October 3rd the presidential candidates chosen at the party primaries in September will descend on Denver, along with up to 3,000 journalists. The debate will be at Magness Arena and tickets will only be available to DU Students through a raffle. There will be two other debates following DU’s, the second debate site is at Hofstra University in New York and the third at Lynn University in Florida.

Winter Carnival This Weekend

The Montrose Rotary is sponsoring the fifteenth annual winter carnival this weekend. The carnival at Cerro Summit features tubing and snowboarding from the top of the summit. There are tubes provided but you need to bring your own snowboard. The event is on Saturday from nine thirty to three thirty and there will be free shuttles for kids from the Aquatic Center. There is also a bus for kids from Olathe, which will leave Olathe Middle School at nine and return to the middle school at three. People are being asked to use the shuttles as there is limited parking at the summit.

US Pro Cycling Challenge Looking for Volunteers

The Montrose Association of Commerce and Tourism is gearing up for the US Pro Cycling Challenge this year and a lot of the groundwork is being laid. Jenni Sopsic, executive director for Montrose ACT says that right now they are looking for lots of volunteers. Details Emerge in Teacher/Student Sexual Relationship

More details have emerged concerning an alleged sexual encounter between a now 26 year old teacher and a student at Basalt High School. The two were caught by the school’s athletic director two weeks ago having sex in the bathroom of a teacher’s office. According to police the two had been involved in a sexual relationship since the student was 17 and she was 25. The student turned 18 in January and their relationship continued but police arrested now 26 year old Lauren Redfern for a pattern of sexual assault by a person in a position of trust. The two both acknowledged the relationship in police investigations and Redfern disclosed details of the start of the relationship that began in December, before the student was 18. Police have not disclosed the student’s name and Redfern could face up to life in prison for the pattern of abuses. Her next court appearance is in March.

Lawmakers Heated Debate Over Credit Check Bill

DENVER - A debate over whether to ban Colorado employers from using credit reports against job applicants became quite vocal earlier today when Democratic Leader John Morse said Republicans are trying to protect corporations while Democrats want to protect “the little guy.” Republicans soundly rejected that concept. The bill would forbid employers from using credit checks for potential job applicants with the exception of those seeking employment in the financial or security sector. The proposal got final approval in the Democratically-led Senate on Tuesday. Republicans are expected to defeat the measure in the House, where they have a slim majority….

Former U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson Visits CMU

GRAND JUNCTION - While touring the country former U.S. Senator Alan Simpson of Wyoming made a stop at Colorado Mesa University yesterday and talked about his grave concerns on the topic of the U.S. debt. Simpson explained that during the Clinton administration he and Erskine Bowles had a 10 year plan that would reduce the nation’s debt spending by 2.2 trillion dollars. Right now he told Bloomberg News that he was “terrified” of the deficit issue. Simpson has lectured at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and served for two years as the Director of the Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School….
