Attorneys for Douglas Thames, who has now been charged with the murder of a Palisade woman in 1994, claim their client was contacted improperly by FBI agents while he was being held in the Mesa County Jail. According to court filings he was being questioned with the presence of his lawyer. Now attorneys are seeking subpoenas for records showing all those who signed in and out of the jail on May 10th as well as internal jail surveillance video tracking Thames movements on that day. Meanwhile Thames is still serving life in prison without parole for a 1989 rape murder. He was arrested in Mesa County on that charge in 1995.

At a board meeting yesterday in Glenwood Springs a state water official stated that Western Colorado, in particular, Northwest Colorado has become a region of severe drought during the past month. Veva Deheza, manager of the Colorado Water Conservation Board gave this update yesterday and based on those findings a task force has now asked the governor to elevate the response level for the Colorado, Gunnison and Yampa/White river basins under Colorado’s drought response plan. The immediate future does not look much better as forecasters are expecting above average temperatures and lower than normal precipitation in the next couple of months.

The Montrose City Council met last night with a pretty full schedule. The biggest item on the agenda however was the discussion and vote on a Business Retention project to help out 3M subsidiary Ross Reels. The plan is to use money from the Montrose Tourism and Promotion fund to run a joint marketing and cross promotion plan. The plan would increase exposure of the community through advertising in other regional markets. In return, Ross Reels would retain at least twenty employees for the term of the contract. The city council approved the decision with a contract for two years at twenty thousand dollars a year with annual performance review and an option to extend the contract if necessary. Another big item on the agenda was the discussion of the town participation contract for the US Pro Cycling Challenge in August. That matter was tabled until the next meeting.
